Silence goes faster backwards.
Three times.
Silence goes faster backwards.
Three times.
I repeat.
Silence goes faster backwards.
Three times.
Your attention please.
- Jean Cocteau, Orphée

Nothing (Repeated) is a continuation of my recent investigations of silent broadcasts. What are the forces at play in a silent broadcast?

Why would we incorporate the idea of repetition into this broadcast?
What would it be to repeat nothing?
How does one repeat nothing?

A nothing on the radio dial is not the same as a nothing shared in person. A nothing on the radio can be imagined as an open space in a field of static. Pure potential. It can also indicate total system failure. A stoppage in the flow of energies or a leaking reservoir.

Cross Waves is a Canadian Sound Art series that includes performances and internet radio programs curated by eight media artists representing different regional and cultural perspectives in Canada. The series will take place between July 2014 and June 2015. The content will be contextualized by the curators through commentaries and essays and will draw attention to Sound Artists from across Canada.
