Of all the hearers

Sightings - Leonard & Bina Ellen Gallery (Montréal)
May 14 - September 16, 2018

The audio for the exhibition is available for listening here. The text can be viewed here.

Of all the hearers is an enactment of a report with accompanying soundtrack. It consists of a letter describing a strange auditory phenomenon submitted to the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research in 1891 (published in 1893) by Sarah Jenkins, a young woman from Boston. She writes of a well-known and respected elderly musician in her neighbourhood who dies unexpectedly. This event triggers a strange sonic phenomenon experienced the night of the musician’s funeral by her, her mother, her two sisters and a friend.

Additional background on the work can be viewed on the Sightings webpage in English and français.

Of all the hearers was originally developed at Sporobole centre en art actuel and workshopped on their 16 channel outdoor sound system in 2017. This project would not have been completed without this support. Thank you Sporobole.
