Field Sound: Mid/Side as part of Formats X
Librarie Formats

Vernissage: Wednesday, May 25
Field Sound will speak briefly about our selections while playing records and drinking wine.

Field Sound's (Douglas Moffat & Steve Bates) contribution to Librairie Formats' Formats X series will be launched and on display in the store for just over four weeks. Formats X is a project of Librairie Formats where artists and artist group are invited to select/order a series of books/documents/records around their area(s) of interest. For our iteration, we have included books and records of, and about, sound and listening. We have tried to cover the breadth of our shared and divergent interests as Field Sound. One that considers the sonics of landscape, radio, conflict, capital, the dead, noise, culture/nature, and what we refer to as acoustic pessimism, a sort of doom-laden listening.

A public talk with Romeo Gongora, Dominique Fontaine and Steve Bates

OCTOBER 8
Mobilités et échanges
PHI Centre
407, Saint-Pierre Street
514-225-0525

“Ici et ailleurs, de nouvelles regions du monde” gives a voice to artists, curators and critics working in Quebec and the “Global South” zone (Africa, South and Central America, Asia). It examines new currents in the art world and the new cultural references emerging in a globalized world.

An initiative of Dominique Fontaine, this is the first in a series of events exploring artistic exchanges between Quebec and the countries of the Global South. Artists Steve Bates and Romeo Gongora will share their residency experiences in countries not generally considered prime destinations for most Quebec artists. Steve Bates is back from a residency at the Waaw Centre for Art and Design in Saint-Louis du Sénégal and Romeo Gongora recently participated in the first international workshop held at the Kin Art Studio in Kinshasa (DRC). They will present some of the work created while in residence.

The lectures will be offered in French and English, depending on guest:

Steve Bates (English), Dominique Fontaine (French), Romeo Gongora (French)

Saturday May 18th
Radio In Its Place - Here There Nowhere Now
10:00 am Keynote address

I'll be delivering a keynote presentation at New Adventures in Sound Art's Trans-X, a Symposium about Transmission Art

In this talk, Steve Bates will discuss some of his recent projects that include site-specific recording, questions of threshold and border, residues of colonialism, silent broadcasts, sonic infiltrations and transmission. These projects include low-power productions in Dakar, and Ndar/Saint-Louis, Senegal and on Austria’s national state radio network. While different in their range and context, these investigations with site-specific sound geographies relate to a larger whole. The colonial history of longitude connects the project Radio 16º 16º to the site of Saint-Louis where site-specific recordings were collected as the raw material for low-power broadcasts. The title, borrowed from the abbreviated coordinates of the city, indicate an influence of military concept and jargon on the everyday. A Year of Radio Silence is a project with multiple iterations that uses the idea of a silent broadcast as its primary material, here one that causes a grand piano in Austria’s state radio studio to resonate across the former colonial power.

MAY 9, 2013
Eastern Bloc

Also performing this evening are Ryan Jordan (UK) and Nicolas Maigret (FR)
Solo performance at the Eastern Bloc's Sight + Sound Festival.

Drawing inspiration from the field of bioacoustics as well as the study of sonic environments in urban planning, Bates’ performance proposes a real-time collection and re-diffusion of sounds and vibrations from in and around the performance venue. These collected sounds are then converted to each of the primary color channels of a video signal, thus providing an immediate and synesthetic relationship between sound and light. For the first time ever, Bates integrates generative video signal into his live sound work, to create a unique immersive experience.

Artist Presentation
March 24th 2013
Doors 19:00
Berlin
Elsenstraße 52
12059 Berlin, Germany

In this talk, Steve Bates will discuss his sound work including performance, recordings, radio and installations and two current challenges of working with sound. Okta (with Douglas Moffat), is a large scale permanent, multi-channel sound installation commissioned by the City of Toronto, using site-specific cloud cover to control sound playback to 24 speakers, and an upcoming field recording and radio project, Radio 16°8′N 16°27′W, in Saint-Louis, Senegal. The challenge of these two projects is, on the one hand, the problem of placing sound into public space, and with the other, how to listen to a completely new space outside one’s experience. The ethics and aesthetics of these two projects will be considered in the context of sound art history and ethnographic study. Excerpts of sound works and/or a brief performance will also take place.

Sunday, February 10:
Winnipeg Art Gallery

2:00 pm

I'll be giving a contextualizing lecture on Janet Cardiff's 40 Part Motet which will be on exhibition at the Winnipeg Art Gallery from February 1, 2013 to April 28, 2013.

Taking Janet Cardiff’s 40 Part Motet as a starting point, Steve Bates will place this work within the larger scope of sound art and its related technologies. Working from the idea that sound art exists not as a separate genre from visual art, but within its canon, as well as looking at it’s shared and separate history from music, this talk will outline sound art’s history of voice, technology and acoustic space.

40 Part Motet utilizes electro-magnetic technology and voice that is disembodied, displaced, and distributed through space; all tropes of sound art and the technologies of recorded sound. To stand inside 40 Part Motet is to experience Thomas Tallis’ Spem in Alium in a sort of exploded acoustic space where the listener’s experience is distorted in scale and location revealing a new psychoacoustic space spread over time.
