Op. 314, Dredge and Dread is an underwater road movie through the lens of a submerged camera and underwater speaker playing back Strauss’ famous Opus 314: An der schönen, blauen Donau (On the Beautiful Blue Danube). Using hydrophones I recorded the sound under the water from the submerged speaker. Here the composition is stretched so the duration of the music equals the length of the river in a relationship of seconds to kilometres.
In addition to the above mentioned sound system, there are faint sounds of a dredger working its way along the Danube clearing a trench for the various transport boats and luxury cruisers that constantly traverse the river. The hydrophones captured the mechanical noise from the dredger and scraping noises as it chewed away at layers of sediment from the bottom of the river.
